Roy Halladay has been traded to the Philadelphia Phillies along with some prospects from Seattle in a blockbuster three team trade involving the Phillies, Mariners, and Blue Jays. The Phillies and Halladay have agreed to a three-year contract extension worth $60 million or more, which would keep him in red pinstripes through the 2013. In return for Halladay the Blue Jays receive:

Last but not least we get to news concerning the World Series Champion New York Yankees. Their World Series MVP Hideki Matsui will be signing with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim leaving me to believe the Yankees will either try to sign Bay or resign old reliable Johnny Damon to hit in the two hole behind “El Capitan” Derek Jeter.

That is what has happened this week and it’s only Tuesday! If this is what is going on in December I can’t wait to see what goes on during the rest of the off season.

YANKEES ONE STEP CLOSER TO A HAPPY “HALLADAY”

Report: Toronto Blue Jays’ Roy Halladay would waive no-trade clause for deal to New York Yankees

THREE DAYS after the Daily News wrote that the Red Sox were “putting on a full-court press” to trade for Roy Halladay, a report out of Canada says the Toronto ace has told the Blue Jays he would waive his no-trade clause for a deal – to the Yankees.

A story on Canada’s Slam Sports Web site Friday quoted an unnamed major league executive as saying, “I don’t know when he is going and I don’t know where he’s going. But I do know that Halladay has told the Jays he’ll approve a trade to the Yankees.” The story was written by Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun, a nominee this year for election to the writer’s wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame.

A baseball source said all was quiet when asked Friday if a Halladay-to-the Yankees trade was imminent.

Halladay, 32, has used his full no-trade power in the past – last season he said he would not approve deals to either Minnesota  or Texas, but that roadblock appears to be out of the way for a potential Yankee trade.

Halladay, who has a career record of 148-76 with a 3.43 ERA in 12 years in Toronto, has one year left on a three-year, $40 million deal. He’s slated to earn $15.75 million next year and become a free agent after the season, unless he is traded and reaches an agreement on a megabucks contract extension.

New Toronto GM Alex Anthopolous has said he would deal Halladay within the AL East, if that’s where the best deal was for the Jays. Team president Paul Beeston  was quoted recently saying that Halladay – a six-time All-Star and the 2003 AL Cy Young Award winner – did not want to re-sign with Toronto.

“They’re going to have to move him,” a major-league scout said recently.

The News reported in Wednesday’s editions that the Red Sox were hoping to get a deal for Halladay wrapped up before the beginning of the winter meetings Dec. 7, according to a source. The Yanks or Sox would have to part with a package of young major-leaguers and top prospects and, likely, offer a large contract extension, in any deal. Other big-market teams such as the Angels could get involved, too.

When Johan Santana became available in similar circumstances in 2007, the Yankees did not trade for him, figuring they would rather take a crack at CC Sabathia in free agency after the 2008 season rather than have to give up players and sign Santana to an expensive extension.

The Yankees are scheduled to meet next week to discuss their 2010 budget. GM Brian Cashman said earlier in the week that he had not yet engaged the agents for free agent players, but he confirmed that he has spoken to multiple teams, including the Blue Jays, about trade possibilities.

Halladay was a mentor of sorts to the Yankees’ A.J. Burnett when the two were teammates in Toronto, and Burnett has given Halladay credit for helping him mature as a pitcher.

Halladay would give the Yankees an imposing front three in their rotation, alongside Sabathia and Burnett. The Yanks hope to re-sign Andy Pettitte, too, which would add depth to the rotation, which they would likely need in the event of a Halladay deal, because they probably would have to surrender either Phil Hughes or Joba Chamberlain in the trade.

Cy Young Award
Photobucket
Zack Greinke won the AL Cy Young award and Tim Lincecum won his second consecutive NL Cy Young award. Greinke finished up the season with 16 wins and Lincecum won 15 games but was only 5 – 5 after the All Star Break. Lincecum upset Carpenter and Wainwright of the St. Louis Cardinals who seemed to be the favorites in the running for the award.
Rookie of The Year

Wagner College product Andrew Bailey of the Oakland Athletics won the AL Rookie of the Year and Chris Coghlan of the Florida Marlins won the NL Rookie of the Year. The rookie LF finished up his season with a .321 batting average and a .460 slugging percentage. The rookie  Athletics’ closer racked up an ERA of 1.84 in 68 games .167 batting average against.

Colorado Rockies’ manager Jim Tracy won the NL Manager of the Year and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim manager Mike Scoscia won the AL Manager of the year award. Scoscia led his club to the ALCS but was beaten by 2007 MOY Joe Girardi’s Yankees as they went on to win the World Series. After taking over during the season and after the firing of Clint Hurdle Rockies’ manager took his team to their second playoff beth in 3 seasons as they won the NL Wild Card but were beat by the Philadelphia Phillies in the NLDS who eventually lost to the New York Yankees in the World Series.
Comeback Player of the Year

MAGIC NUMBER IS 19

Photobucket
Even with the Yankees loss to the Blue Jays last night the magic number has decreased to 19. Ramiro Pena is the latest Yankee to don the number 19 but most memorably it was worn by the hero of the the 2003 ALCS, Aaron Boone. Aaron Boone just returned to the Houston Astros after having open heart surgery earlier in the season. 19 was also worn by former Yankee Bubba Crosby.
DEREK JETER HIT COUNT: 2718

Derek is only 4 away from the Iron Horse and will most likely break that record today with a double header against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Toronto – This game got a little to close for comfort at certain points and the pitching wasn’t exactly the greatest we have seen from the Yankees in 2009 but it got the job done. The Yankee bats exploded once again for 10 runs in this ball game. It is the second time in the last two series that they have had a game with 10 runs. The Yankees are a dominant presence in the AL East this season and they have shown that they are not going away.

MAGIC NUMBER

Photobucket
Today’s Magic Number is 22. It is the number of current injured Yankee Xavier Nady and of former Yankee the disgraced Roger Clemens. The Yankees lead over the Boston Red Sox remains at 7.5 games because of Boston’s win over the Tampa Bay Rays last night.

MAGIC NUMBER

The Yankees start a 4 game set in Toronto tonight and they’re magic number is rapidly shrinking as they have been on a tear lately. Today the magic number is that of former Yankee great Don Mattingly. New York currently has a 7.5 game lead over Boston who lost last night to the Tampa Bay Rays.

SERGIO MITRE TURNS IN GEM IN 10 – 0 YANKEE WIN

Sergio Mitre turned over a new leaf and almost did a complete roundabout of his 2009 season by nearly throwing a perfect game. Mitre gave up one hit and more importantly no runs! Mitre left the game after he was hit in the forearm with a line drive but still turned in a stellar performance before giving way to reliever Chad Gaudin. The Yankee bats just don’t seem to slow down but three errors committed by Chicago in the game didn’t exactly help their cause in search for a win and to make a bid at catching the Detroit Tigers in the AL Central. Ozzie Guillen was up to his old antics arguing with umpires and even sitting back in the dugout as if it was unbearable to watch Contreras pitch. Guillen wanted a fresh arm from Triple A for today’s game but GM Kenny Williams wants to hold on until Tuesday September 1st the 40 man roster expansion day before calling anybody up. Speaking of Tuesday Catcher Francisco Cervelli will be called up to relieve Jose Molina and to allow Jorge Posada’s left ring finger to heal properly before he gets behind the plate again. The Red Sox take on Toronto tonight at Fenway as they try to hold the
ir place in the AL East and try to hold their spot atop the AL Wild Card race.
