JORGE & YANKEES ARE JUICED UP AT THE TROP!

St.Petersburg, Fla.- Last year the theme was walk off victories. On this first road trip of the season the theme seems to be lose the first game and then take the next two. The Yankees are winning series the hard way but I don’t think any fan of the 27 Time World Champions would have anything against plain old winning. A win is a win as Brett Favre said as a member of the New York Jets. The Yankees come off of this road trip 4 – 2 and 1 game behind the Toronto Blue Jays who have a record of 5 – 1. Wow you know it is early in the season when a team like the Toronto Blue Jays are leading the pack in the AL East. Game 3 at the Trop started out in favor of the Rays as they held a 3 – 1 lead over the World Champions until “Jorge Juiced One” to drive in 2 RBI’s and tie it up. The Yankees did not relinquish the lead from that point in fact they added 4 more runs to the aforementioned lead while the Rays only added 2 runs to come out the loser. Aside from the hitting the thing that kept the Yankees in this game was stellar starting pitching from their number 2 man A.J. Burnett. Burnett gave the Yankees 7 quality innings on their way to their fourth victory of this very young season in which they endeavor on a championship defense. If the Yankees want to repeat they are going to have keep their foot on the accelerator like they have been these first few games.

YANKEES COME BACK STRONG WITH ROUT OF RAYS

St.Petersburg, Fla.- It almost came to be. CC Sabathia almost threw a no hitter against the Tampa Bay Rays this afternoon until Sabathia’s former teammate Kelly Shoppach dumped a base hit to left field in front of Brett Gardner. Sabathia had the no no working through 7 and 2/3 innings until it was broken up. If Yankee fans thought last night’s game was bad it was nothing compared to what Rays fans had to deal with today. To quote the Avis Commercial it was “Total Domination.” Every Yankee in the lineup today had a base hit and that includes catcher Francisco Cervelli who called a great game en route to almost catching his first ever no hitter. David Robertson came out of the pen after Sabathia gave up the hit to Shoppach and he only gave up 1 more hit. So while the New York Yankees had 14 hits and 10 runs in the ball game the Tampa Bay Rays only had 2.
Mark Teixeira’s hitless streak has finally come to an end today in St. Petersburg. In the top of the 5th inning Teixeira doubled to shallow right field to drive in Derek Jeter. He also had 2 more hits in the ball game to finally put the 0 for out of his mind. One of his hits resulted in him going back to the dugout when he hit a ball of the top of the wall in left field. Teixeira was rounding first but one of the slowest runners on the team, DH Nick Johnson was in front of him. When Johnson didn’t know if the ball was caught or not he froze at second base leaving Teixeira caught between first and second where he was caught in a run down in tagged out. As John Sterling would say, “You’re on the Mark, Teixeira!”

YANKEES PAY THE “PRICE” TONIGHT AT THE TROP

St.Petersburg,FLA.- The Yankees were just simply dominated tonight at Tropicana Field by the Rays and it was all at the hands of Rookie Phenom David Price. A Minor Leaguer last year Price showed tonight that he has what it takes to be in the Major Leagues. The Rays used Price out of the bullpen in 2008 as almost a closer in their playoff run and into the World Series which they lost to the Philadelphia Phillies. Price gave the Rays 7 and 2/3 innings while giving up only 2 runs and striking out 7. In the top of the fourth inning the Yankees scored two runs on an RBI Triple by Alex Rodriguez who scored when the ball was thrown down the LF line after Nick Johnson scored from second base. The Yankees were up 2 – 0 in the bottom of the fourth but Javy Vazquez reintroduced himself to Yankee fans by looking like the Javy the Yankees traded away. Vazquez gave up 5 runs in that bottom of the fourth inning and gave up another 3 in the sixth after breezing through 1,2,3 in the bottom of the 5th inning. Looking at the first 2 innings this looked like it was going to be a pitcher’s duel but “The Price was Right” for the Rays as they beat the Yankees 9 – 2 in the first game of a 3 game set.

“It’s mind-boggling,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “You think about what Derek has done his whole career, how great he has been for such a long time and what he has meant to the organization, and you put his name next to Lou Gehrig. It’s amazing.” Jeter plans on storing the ball at the home of his parents, who were in attendance Wednesday and plan on remaining in New York until Jeter breaks Gehrig’s record. He nearly did so in the eighth inning, running up a full count before reliever Grant Balfour walked him with two outs.

MAGIC NUMBER IS DOWN TO 14

With the Yankees defeating the Tampa Bay Rays again the magic number lowers again. 14 is the number of new Yankee Eric Hinske. It was also the number of former Yankee Angel Berroa.

MAGIC NUMBER IS 16

Photobucket
When the Yankees took the night cap of the double header it lowered their magic number yet again to 16. 16 belonged to Yankee great Whitey Ford also known as the Chairman of the Board. The Yankees will send Chad Gaudin (5-10) out to face David Price (7-7) tonight as they once again play the Tampa Bay Rays.
DEREK JETER HIT COUNT: 2718

Derek Jeter was the only Yankee starter who was hitless yesterday and he stayed 3 hits behind the Iron Horse. Jeter will face off against David Price in a bid to pass Lou Gehrig and break the New York Yankees All Time Hits Record.

The Magic Number is now down to 17! 17 is currently worn by Jerry Hairston Jr. and was formerly worn by former Yankee CF Mickey Rivers. The Yankees will play another game against the Tampa Bay Rays tonight with a chance to lower that magic number even more. The Red Sox loss to the Chicago White Sox puts the Yankees up 8.5 games atop the AL East.
INJURY UPDATE ON CARLOS PENA

Carlos Pena’s season is over after he broke two of his fingers after being hit by a pitch from CC Sabathia after he offered at a pitch up and in. Pena who led the American League with 39 home runs will in all likelihood watch Mark Teixeira who has 35 HR’s with 24 left to play pass him.

MAGIC NUMBER IS 19

Even with the Yankees loss to the Blue Jays last night the magic number has decreased to 19. Ramiro Pena is the latest Yankee to don the number 19 but most memorably it was worn by the hero of the the 2003 ALCS, Aaron Boone. Aaron Boone just returned to the Houston Astros after having open heart surgery earlier in the season. 19 was also worn by former Yankee Bubba Crosby.

MAGIC NUMBER

The Yankees start a 4 game set in Toronto tonight and they’re magic number is rapidly shrinking as they have been on a tear lately. Today the magic number is that of former Yankee great Don Mattingly. New York currently has a 7.5 game lead over Boston who lost last night to the Tampa Bay Rays.

Baltimore, MD — On a night where starter A.J. Burnett clearly did not have his best stuff the Yankee bats picked him up in a big way as they hit 5 balls over the fence at Camden Yards last night. Robinson Cano was a big part of the aerial assault as he was 3 – 4 with a two run homer in the second inning. Jorge Posada also went deep as he hit homers 18 and 19 on the season. In the seventh Nick Swisher and Eric Hinske went back to back en route to a 9 – 6 Yankee win.

NEW YORK (AP)–Mark Teixeira(notes), Nick SwisherJohnny Damon(notes) andDerek Jeter(notes) all know the secret to success at the new Yankee Stadium: Hit the ball in the air to right field.

Four more home runs by the Yankees at baseball’s $1.5 billion bandbox–all to right field–backed Andy Pettitte(notes) in a 5-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night , the start of what figures to be a challenging week for New York.

“I just think we didn’t hit enough balls to right-center. There’s a conveyor-belt effect out there,” Rays manager Joe Maddon said. “It’s kind of like a jet stream.”

Teixeira’s solo homer in the first and Swisher’s two-run drive in the second built a 3-0 lead, but the Rays tied the score in the fourth after Alex Rodriguez(notes)bobbled Ben Zobrist’s(notes) leadoff grounder to third for an error.Michel Hernandez(notes) had an RBI single and Gabe Kapler(notes) followed with a two-run homer to left, Kapler’s first home run since Sept. 7 for Milwaukee off San Diego’s Chris Young.

Solo homers by Damon in the sixth and Jeter in the eighth finished Andy Sonnanstine(notes) (4-6), who gave up four homers for the first time in his big league career and dropped to 1-6 on the road.

Series at a Glance

  1. Fri, Jun 5 - Ppd.

  2. Sat, Jun 6 - Final

  3. Sun, Jun 7 - Final

  4. Mon, Jun 8 - Final

There have been 105 homers in 29 games at the new ballpark, a sharp increase from the 160 last season at the original Yankee Stadium, and 63 have been hit to right and right-center. New York won despite finishing with just six hits–and no plate appearances with runners in scoring position for the first time since May 14, 2006.

“This team hasn’t been textbook all year,” Damon said. “As long as we get the hits and they fly out of the ballpark, it’s a good thing.”

It was the 10th game of five or more homers at Yankee Stadium.

“I made a few mistakes up in the zone and they really made me pay for them,” said Sonnanstine, who gave up five runs and six hits in seven-plus innings.

New York improved the AL’s best record to 34-23, opened a one-game AL East lead over second-place Boston and improved to 21-0 when allowing three runs or fewer. The Yankees headed to Boston after the game for a three-game series against the Red Sox, who are 5-0 against New York this year. The Yankees return home for a weekend Subway Series against the Mets.

“Obviously we would like to get payback and say all that good stuff, but we have to go out and play well,” Damon said.

Damon wasn’t sure his homer would make it. Nine of Damon’s 12 home runs this season and six of Jeter’s eight have come at home.

“I just have to remember that I am strong and my will could will the ball out,” Damon said humorously.

Pettitte (6-2) allowed three runs–two earned–and five hits in six innings, striking out a season-high seven. After walking 11 in his previous two starts, he cut his bases on balls to three.

Phil Hughes(notes), bumped to the bullpen so Chien-Ming Wang(notes) could rejoin the rotation, followed with a 1-2-3 seventh in his first major league regular-season relief outing after 28 starts.

“Whatever it is, I’m ready to go,” Hughes said.

Phil Coke(notes) followed with a hitless eighth and Mariano Rivera(notes) finished with a perfect ninth for save No. 496, his 14th save in 15 chances this year. Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Rivera, who had a pair of 1-2-3 outings after Saturday’s loss to the Rays, might not be available Tuesday after pitching three days in a row, but the closer said he’d pitch if needed.

“Oh, definitely, we need to win a game there,” he said.

All-Star third baseman Evan Longoria(notes) returned to the Rays’ starting lineup after missing nearly a week with an injured left hamstring and went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts and a walk. Since injuring the leg while running out a grounder last Tuesday, Longoria had been limited to a pair of pinch-hitting appearances against the Yankees.

“He came in. He was adamant. He felt ready to go today, so we threw him out there,” Maddon said.
