IN SLOW OFFSEASON METS SURE UP OUTFIELD BY ACQUIRING MATTHEWS JR.

Photobucket
With Carlos Beltran expected to miss the early part of the season the Mets acquired OF Gary Matthews Jr. from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim for P Brian Stokes and cash considerations. In addition to paying off a $500,000 obligation for trading Matthews, the Angels will pick up $21.5 million of the $23.5 million remaining on his contract, according to SI.com, which first reported the deal. In exchange, they will receive Stokes, 30, a right-handed reliever and Southern California native who was to compete for a setup role in the Mets’ bullpen. Matthews wanted to be traded to a team that would allow him to start, and the Mets, at least temporarily, can offer him that assurance. But if all goes to plan, Beltran will be back on the field in May. With Jason Bay and Jeff Francoeur entrenched in left and right field, respectively, Matthews will be relegated back to the bench — as he was with the Angels. Matthews should have no problem getting at bats even as a fourth outfielder.

BOSTON SAYS “BAY- BAY” AS JASON SIGNS WITH METS

Photobucket
It certainly took longer than expected but since the Mets were the lone suitor to Jason Bay they took their sweet time in acquiring him. The player formerly known as the “Yankee Killer” will now resort to killing Phillies, Braves and Marlins in the NL East not the AL East. Boston did replace Bay with Mike Cameron but Bay is too good an outfielder to let him just get away like the Red Sox did. Mike Cameron better be the best center fielder Boston’s ever seen or the fans may be a little upset with one Mr. Theo Epstein. Bay agreed to a 4 year deal with New York that is worth an estimated $65 Million Dollars. The Mets add Bay to an outfield that includes Carlos Beltran, Jeff Franceour and Alex Cora who is a utility IF/OF. The Phillies’ acquisition of “Doc” Roy Halladay may have crippled the Mets in their quest to win the East but they just got themselves one heck of a crutch in Jason Bay.
REMEMBER THIS?
Photobucket
In 2000 Bay was drafted in the 22nd round out of Gonzaga by the Montreal Expos but never played one day in an Expos uniform as he made his MLB debut in 2003 with the San Diego Padres. In 2002 Bay was traded with Jimmy Cerrano to the New York Mets for Lou Collier. So, Welcome BACK to New York Jason.

WAGNER AGREES TO DEAL WITH BOSTON

Photobucket

BOSTON — Hoping that the end result will be the first World Series ring of his illustrious career, power left-hander Billy Wagner decided at the proverbial 11th hour to waive his no-trade rights, paving the way for the Mets to deal him to the Boston Red Sox.

The process started on Friday, when the Red Sox were awarded Wagner in a waiver claim. Ultimately, the Mets agreed to take two Minor League players to be named. But the deal wasn’t completed until Tuesday afternoon’s deadline, because it wasn’t until then that Wagner approved it.

“Basically, he had his full no-trade clause, so he had a decision to make, whether he wanted to stay in New York with the Mets or join the Red Sox,” said Boston general manager Theo Epstein. “Ultimately in the end, he woke up and today decided that he wanted to join a team that was in the middle of a pennant race and had a chance to pitch into October and had a chance to get a ring, which he’s never done.

“I can’t speak for the different ups and downs, the different turns the decision took for him. But in the end, he told us [that] he woke up today and he really wanted a chance to win a World Series. He’s coming here for all the right reasons.”

At the time the trade was completed, Wagner was in Miami with the Mets. He traveled home to Virginia and will join the Red Sox at Fenway Park in time for Thursday night’s finale of a four-game series against the White Sox.

“We were looking to add another left-handed reliever and I think we added a very quality, power left-handed reliever today,” said Epstein. “Obviously, his track record speaks for itself. Coming off the Tommy John [elbow ligament replacement] surgery, we understand there are limitations, but we think with the depth of our bullpen, with rosters expanding in September, that’s something we can manage around and I think we stand to benefit by adding another quality pitcher.”

A six-time All-Star closer, Wagner, 38, had no reservations about being one of several quality setup men the Red Sox can use in front of Jonathan Papelbon. What he wanted — less than a year after having reconstructive elbow surgery — was to be sure that his new team wouldn’t use him in a way that would be detrimental to his health.

Major League Baseball granted the Red Sox a window of time in the hours before the deadline to speak to Wagner directly so the club could address some of his concerns.

“On his rehab, he pitched every other day a number of times,” said Epstein. “We’re probably not going to pitch him back-to-back days and we’ll be smart about how we use him. We still think he has a lot to offer.”

Wagner has an $8 million club option for 2010, but the Red Sox assured him they won’t exercise it. They did, however, keep their right to offer him arbitration, which gives Boston a chance to receive compensatory Draft picks should Wagner sign with another team.

With 385 career saves, Wagner has set his sights on becoming the fifth to reach 400, then 424 — the current record for left-handers held by John Franco, another former member of the Mets bullpen.

“I think the best deals all have present benefit and future benefit,” Epstein said. “But there’s no guaranteed future benefit here. There’s no guaranteed present benefit. When you add a reliever, any reliever, no matter how good in the middle of a season, it’s unknown what he’s going to add. We scouted him, we had a number of scouts at his outings and the reports were really positive. We think he’s going to help. There’s no guarantee of present benefit or future benefit, but there’s a chance for both.”

The Red Sox will cover the remaining prorated portion of Wagner’s 2009 salary of $10.5 million.

“We’re excited to have him, and hopefully he can help us win a championship,” said Papelbon.

Despite Wagner’s gaudy credentials, the Red Sox made it clear they won’t put too much on his shoulders — nor do they need to with a bullpen that has been a significant strength all year long.

Aside from Papelbon, the Red Sox have several setup men having quality seasons, including Hideki Okajima, Manny Delcarmen, Daniel Bard and Ramon Ramirez. Okajima had been the only lefty in the bullpen.

“I think we’re excited,” said Red Sox manager Terry Francona. “I think we have to recognize that he’s 14 months post Tommy John surgery. He’s got two Major League innings. I believe five rehab innings. This is not a guy that we will lean on [heavily]. I think it’s a great addition to our bullpen. But again, we will be very prudent and we’ll use a lot of common sense and we’ll have a lot of communication with him because of what he’s been th
rough physically.”

All along, Epstein had targeted supplementing the bullpen with another lefty. To get one as accomplished as Wagner was a nice bonus.

“We’re realistic,” said Epstein. “He’s less than a year removed from Tommy John surgery and we’re not claiming that we won a playoff spot here today or anything like that. We made a move that gives us a chance to add a really quality pitcher to an already good bullpen and we’re happy about that, but we want to be realistic about the expectations.”

BREAKING DOWN JON NIESE’S INJURY

This is what sparked Niese’s injury, the play at first base. Niese did what appeared to be a split as he tried to cover first on a double play attempt.

2) Niese continuing his delivery still no apparent problem
3) Niese’s right leg crumbles beneath him

5) Niese clutches his right leg in pain
6) Niese is on his back in a whole lot of pain
LATEST UPDATE ON NIESE’S INJURY:

Mets starter Jonathon Niese is out for the season after a Wednesday magnetic resonance imaging exam revealed a complete tear of the right upper hamstring tendon from the bone, a club statement said.

Niese, who was examined at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, was scheduled to have surgery Thursday and is expected to be ready for Spring Training next year.

He was placed on the 60-day disabled list on Thursday and was replaced by veteran right-hander Elmer Dessens, whose contract was purchased from Triple-A Buffalo.

Niese left Wednesday’s 9-0 win over the Cardinals at Citi Field in the top of the second inning after stretching to receive a throw while covering first base on a potential 3-6-1 double play. He went into a split, missed the bag and collapsed moments later while trying to throw a practice pitch with manager Jerry Manuel and the team training staff on the mound. The left-hander, who was 1-1 with a 4.21 ERA in five starts this season, was helped off the mound and into the clubhouse.

The video of Niese’s injury can be seen by clicking the following link:

NIESE & SHEFFIELD ARE THE LATEST INJURED METS

Photobucket

SP Jonathan Niese (Far Left Corner) is the latest injured Met as he injured himself twice in an extremely short period of time. He almost did a split covering first base on a bang bang double play which only resulted in one out. Niese seemed a little uncomfortable after the play so Dan Warthen, Jerry Manuel and both trainers went out to the mound to check on the young starter and to let him throw a warm up pitch to make sure everything was okay. Everything was far from okay because as he was following through on his delivery he fell over. He appeared to hyperextend his knee and then proceeded to clutch the back of his right leg. Last night Luis Castillo injured himself falling down the dugout stairs. The Mets are way too banged up right now to even be competitive in the NL East. It is really getting embarrassing watching them play. The Mets need to make a deal before the waiver deadline if they want those 40+ wins they need to either win the wild card or have a slim chance to make a run at the NL East crown but let’s not get ahead of ourselves here.

SHEFFIELD LIMPS OFF FIELD AFTER HITTING GAPPER

Nobody knows the answer to this one. He just came off the DL and now he’s probably going to be back on it. Maybe the man being 40 years old has something to do with it! Sheffield is lucky number 12 for the Mets as he is the twelfth injured Met.

Roy Halladay threw a complete game against the Yankees tonight but it was a complete game loss! Imagine pitching nine innings of baseball and having the L next to your name in the stats? Halladay has to feel disappointed in himself because he could not get the job done against the hottest team in baseball and the team who sits atop the AL East. Halladay is a great pitcher but the Yankees proved to be too much for him tonight at the Rogers Centre.

ANOTHER MET INJURED IN FLUSHING TONIGHT!

Luis Castillo suffered an injury tonight but it wasn’t suffered on the field. Luis Castillo fell down the stairs entering the Mets’ dugout. Luis’ injury was so severe that the Mets’ trainer and Fernando Tatis had to assist Castillo into the clubhouse as he could not do so under his own power. Luis Castillo has been one of the hottest everyday players for the Mets recently and if he is out for a prolonged period of time the Mets’ season is in worse condition than before and I don’t know how it could get any worse! More Updates on Luis Castillo’s Injury to Come!

OFF DAY NOTES 3rd EDITION

Photobucket
The Yankees swept the Mets, Mariano Rivera picked up his 500th save. Who could ask for a better weekend. The struggling Mets woes continue as just about all of their big names are on the DL for one reason or another. The Yankees exploited the Mets’ weaknesses and continued the beating from 16 days ago at Yankee Stadium. The Bronx Bombers have officially christened the new home of the Mets with the first Subway Series sweep there. This is a sign of good things to come for the bombers and a grim sign for the New York Mets who desperately need to make a deal for another bat in that sorry excuse for a lineup. The Mets have few options but here is one that would be very beneficial to the Amazin’s : Washington Nationals OF/1B Adam Dunn. Dunn can play two positions that the Mets need help with right now. Daniel Murphy has played first base and the out field for the Mets this season and he hasn’t been doing to hot at either position and on top of that Murphy is in a slump at the plate right now. If the Mets want to show the baseball community that they are serious about winning and if they don’t want to disappoint their fans by choking three years in a row and miss the playoffs for the third straight time. My next order of business is Francisco Rodriguez better known as K-Rod. K-Rod came into last night’s game with a one run deficit and pitched very poorly. Luis Castillo and Alex Cora converged in short right field and dropped yet another pop-up behind Francisco Rodriguez in a Subway Series game. Normally that would’ve been a spot for eighth inning man or closer number 2 J.J. Putz. But Putz is on the DL with just about every other player on the New York Mets roster. K-Rod also added insult to injury by walking the opposing closer! Not only did he allow Mo to pick up an RBI but he got to see the master at work as Mariano picked up save number 500. A feat K-Rod can only dream of at the moment. I’m going to end my off day notes post there because I could ramble all day about issues in Major League Baseball but those stories will be for Off Dat Notes 4th Edition. So until my next post See Ya!

CONGRATULATIONS MARIANO!
