Progressive Field~Cleveland–It was a 1 – 1 tie for four innings and Joba was throwing very economically for 6 innings and Girardi let him go out there in the 7th after a long inning on the bench. In the Top of the 7th inning the Yankees scored 4 times to give Joba a lead to work with. A lot of trouble for the Indians came on walks. They walked the bases loaded a few times and one time Nick Swisher made them pay when he hit a 2 RBI double that was almost a Grand Slam but missed it by only about a foot. The other two runs scored when A-Rod hit a dribbler to short that somehow found a way through into the outfield. Joba walked the leadoff man in the 7th got a groundout to Ramiro Pena for the first out but the runner Choo moved into scoring position. Joba reached a top speed of 98 MPH in the 7th, the hardest he’s thrown since being put into the starting rotation. Choo stole third base and the throw from Posada didn’t miss him by much. DeRosa grounded out to Jeter to score Choo which made it a 5 – 2 Yankees lead but gave the Yankees two outs in the bottom of the 7th. Joba recorded the final out of the inning on a fly ball to left fielder Melky Cabrera who recently came off an injury after he cr
ashed into the outfield wall earlier on the road trip. The Yankees have had a total of 10 walks in the game and that total is only up until the top of the 8th inning. Melky drew a walk to lead off the eight which made it 11 walks in the game given up by the tribe. Melky moved to second with no outs on a past ball that got by Shoppach who is in for the injured Victor Martinez who is the DH tonight. Pena bunted foul with two strikes for the second run of the inning trying to get Melky to third but it didn’t work. Damon fouled out to Peralta for the second out of the inning. Derek Jeter grounded out to end the inning. Carroll grounded out to Teixiera for the first out of the eighth.Shoppach grounded to short,Jeter made a 360 throw to first for out number two. The third out was lined to Teixiera by Cabrera for the third out of the inning to end Joba’s longest outing of the season. Nick Swisher stepped in to lead off the top of the ninth inning. Swisher laced a double to the gap in left center for his second consecutive double. Teixiera and Rodriguez struck out back to back for the first two outs of the ninth inning. Posada quickly down 0 – 2 worked the count back to 3 – 2 and popped out to DeRosa in left field. Mariano Rivera was called upon by Girardi to close out the game in the ninth. Mo starts the inning against Ben Francisco who ended his five game hitting streak on a come backer to Rivera. DH Victor Martinez is Mo’s next victim of the inning. Martinez is only 2 – 9 against Mo coming into this at bat. Melky drifts back and puts Martinez’s pop up away for out number two. Shin-Soo Choo steps in as Cleveland’s last hope against Mo. Choo swings out of his shoes on the first pitch 94 MPH fastball. Choo hits a baltimore chop back to Mo to end it and the Yankees finished their road trip 5 – 2 and also they have broken an MLB record of 18 games without committing an error. Mariano finishes the road trip with his eleventh save of the season. Also since the Red Sox did not play today the Yankees gained a one game lead over the SECOND place Red Sox.

Pavano pitched well for 7 1-3 innings, leaving with a 4-2 lead as he sought his sixth win in seven starts in May.

The right-hander signed a four-year, $40 million contract with New York in 2005, but spent much of his time on the disabled list. In only 26 starts, he was 9-8 with a 5.00 ERA.

He got off to a rocky start in Cleveland after signing a one-year, free-agent contract in January. He was 0-3 with a 9.50 ERA in four April starts before becoming one of the Indians’ few bright spots in May.

The Indians put All-Star center fielder Grady Sizemore(notes) on the 15-day disabled list before the game with an inflamed left elbow and played without catcherVictor Martinez(notes), who bruised his left knee Saturday. Reliever Rafael Betancourt(notes)made only three pitches before leaving with a right groin strain Sunday.

Pavano yielded a one-out single to Derek Jeter(notes) in the eighth and was replaced byRafael Perez(notes). Johnny Damon(notes) sent Jeter to third with a double and Perez was replaced by Betancourt, who went to a 2-1 count on Teixeira–and had to leave.

Manager Eric Wedge and trainer Lonnie Soloff went to the mound to check on the right-hander, who tried no warmup pitches before walking to the dugout.

Teixeira hit a 3-2 pitch from Herges off the wall, just out of the reach of a leaping Crowe in center to score both Jeter and Damon and ruin Pavano’s bid for a win.

Pavano gave up three runs and seven hits, striking out four without a walk.

Yankees starter Phil Hughes(notes) struck out six over five innings, allowing four runs on five hits and one walk. The right-hander struggled with his command and
asked for the grounds crew to repair the mound during Cleveland’s three-run third.

After Peralta’s two-run single put Cleveland ahead 2-0, Hughes went to second-base umpire Tim Tschida and pointed to some loose dirt that needed repair.

On Friday night, Yankees left-hander Andy Pettitte(notes) said he had some difficulty with his footing following a rain delay. Pettitte left in the sixth inning with a strained lower back.

With the mound fixed, Hughes hit Shin-Soo Choo(notes) with a pitch and yielded a sacrifice fly to Mark DeRosa(notes) that made it 3-0. Cleveland went ahead 4-0 on a sac fly by Choo in the fifth.

CLEVELAND — CC Sabathia waited until the fifth inning to allow his first hit and had a successful return to Progressive Field, while Jorge Posada and Nick Swisher homered to help the Yankees thump the Indians, 10-5, on Saturday.

Making his second start against the Tribe but his first in Cleveland since last June 28, Sabathia was greeted politely by the crowd at a place he called his “second home.” He settled in comfortably, recording the first 13 outs before Shin-Soo Choo broke up the bid with an infield single up the middle.

Mark DeRosa and Ryan Garko followed with hits to break up Sabathia’s shutout effort. Jamey Carroll also had an RBI single, and Grady Sizemore led off the sixth with a solo home run against Sabathia, who allowed three runs on five hits in a seven-inning, 113-pitch effort, walking three and striking out eight.

Sabathia was staked to a large lead as the Yankees put a pounding on his former rotation mate, Fausto Carmona. The right-hander was hit for seven runs (four earned) through four innings, as Posada and Swisher connected for solo home runs in the second inning and New York batted around in a five-run fifth inning that was marked by two Cleveland errors.

Robinson Cano’s two-run single capped the frame, which featured a bases-loaded, two-run Derek Jeter single up the middle off Carmona — one of two hits for Jeter — and also a run-scoring hit off the bat of Johnny Damon. The first-place Yankees improved to 4-1 on their current road trip and have won 14 of their past 17.

The Red Sox lost to the Jays which gave the Yankees a one game lead in the AL East standings.

It’s official the New York Yankees are in first place! For the first time in three years they are back on top. The Yankees were a half game behind the first place Red Sox but that all changed when the Sox lost to the slumping Toronto Blue Jays. At that point it was only the fifth inning in Cleveland and the Yankees still needed to get through four more innings before first place was theirs. The Yankees didn’t score much but they scored early and that was enough to trump an offense who doesn’t score much when Cy Young Winner Cliff Lee is on the mound for the tribe. Pettite battled through some back pain but still gave the Yankees a quality start which was key in them moving into first place. The first run came off the bat of the Captain Derek Jeter who hit an RBI single to score Nick Swisher. The second run of the inning for the Yankees came off the bat of Mark Teixiera who hit a ground ball to score the speedy Brett Gardner. Nick Swisher had a sac fly to score Robinson Cano and that would conclude the scoring for the Bombers. The Indians scored their only run on a sac fly off the bat of Shin-Soo Choo with Mark DeRosa scoring from third after tagging up. Andy Pettitte went 5 strong innings gave up 6 hits, 1 run, 5 walks and one punch out while picking up his fifth win of the season. Aceves closed the gap to Mo who picked up his tenth save of the season on his way to 500 saves.  The game was delayed by rain for 1 hour and 25 minutes but the pitchers did not warm up because the rain was expected.
