DAVID ORTIZ TESTS POSITIVE FOR STEROIDS
According to lawyers who spoke to the The New York Times, and whose names were not revealed, David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez are on the list of 104 players who tested positive in Major League Baseball’s 2003 survey testing for performance-enhancing drugs, testing that was agreed to and conducted only on the condition that the results would remain anonymous.
Ortiz and Ramirez were members of the Boston Red Sox at the time and helped the club end an 86-year streak in which they hadn’t won a World Series.
Results from the 2003 tests, which met a threshold that led to the establishment of MLB’s current drug policy that includes random testing, were never destroyed and have been the subject of spirited debate among fans and media about what should be done with the names from that period in which the substances were not yet outlawed under collective bargaining rules. The results have become a legal issue being contested by the MLB Players Association and the federal government.
Previously, other players have been linked to the list based on leaks: Barry Bonds, Jason Grimsley, Alex Rodriguez, David Segui and Sammy Sosa. There are 97 names that remain undisclosed.
According to the Times, new information on Ortiz and Ramirez — the latter of whom, now with the Dodgers, returned earlier this month from a 50-game suspension for a subsequent violation of the game’s drug policy — sprang from interviews with persons connected to pending litigation.
Earlier Thursday, prior to the posting of the story on the newspaper’s Web site, Ortiz responded to questions about the 2003 tests by telling a Times reporter, “I’m not talking about that anymore. I have no comment.”
Michael Weiner, the current general counsel and executive director-elect for the players union, also declined comment.
“We, of course, would have no comment and refer all comments to Major League Baseball,” said Dodgers vice president of communications Josh Rawitch.
“We have no comment because Major League Baseball has no knowledge of the names that are on the list,” said MLB vice president of public relations Pat Courtney.
In its report, the Times points out that Ortiz had been let go by the Minnesota Twins following the 2002 season, and after signing a low-profile contract with the Red Sox, set personal highs with 31 home runs and 101 RBIs in 2003. Ortiz continued improving on those statistics, compiling 148 RBIs in 2005 and 54 homers the following season.
When his recent suspension was handed down on May 7, Ramirez said, “I’ve taken and passed about 15 drug tests over the past five seasons.”
That five-year period would extend back to 2004.
When Rodriguez admitted to the report of his positive 2003 test, he said he hoped that the names of others who tested positive would not be revealed.
“I hope those names never come out,” Rodriguez said. “There’s so much negativity and sadness going on around the world and the U.S. … people look at baseball for a savior or for inspiration, and I know that I’ve let a lot of people down.”

YANKS,ANGELS FINALE RAINED OUT
NEW YORK — The series finale between the Yankees and Angels was postponed on Sunday due to inclement weather, with a date for the rescheduled game yet to be determined. The official announcement was made at approximately 2 p.m. ET, as the tarpaulin had never left the playing field on a gray, cool afternoon in the Bronx. The Yankees are scheduled to host the Red Sox for their first meeting at the new Yankee Stadium on Monday. “Physically, our guys get a day off, which could be very helpful,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “You don’t want to get rained out and start piling up games at the end, but physically, this could help us.” The Yankees and Angels each have a mutual off-day on Sept. 14, but Yanks general manager Brian Cashman said that discussions on the rescheduling would continue with Major League Baseball and no date would be announced on Sunday. “I’ve heard a few things being thrown around, but nothing official yet,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. “I’m sure that both organizations will be talking to each other.” Both teams will push their starting pitchers back one day. The Bombers said that Phil Hughes would start instead on Monday against the Red Sox at home, while the Angels said that Joe Saunders will start Monday at Oakland. “We think it’s best to keep everyone going,” Girardi said. The Yankees announced that fans holding paid tickets for the postponed game may use them for the rescheduled game, or exchange their paid tickets for any regular-season game at Yankee Stadium within 12 months of the postponed game (subject to availability).

YANKEES LOSE THIRD STRAIGHT AS RED SOX COMPLETE SWEEP

The Yankees have been doing EVERYTHING wrong lately. Correct me if I’m wrong here but if your team has a lead do you not want to keep it? Growing up I was taught that winning is the most important thing but that its the only thing especially when you’re the New York Yankees. In all three games in Boston the Yankees had a lead of one run or more over the Red Sox at some point or another. Every time that they had a lead it would be gone just like that! **Poof** and the lead was gone! I’m trying to be a true die hard here and stay with my team but I have to admit it’s getting really hard! I think I might move to LA soon so I can start begging Joe Torre to come back to New York with me to knock some sense into the Yanks. The Yankees take on the Tigers tonight but there’s very little hope of a win if any at all. From a very somber Yankees fan Let’s Go Yankees!

BURNETT STRUGGLES IN YANKEE LOSS

A.J. Burnett has become the Yankees stopper the last couple of times out but he couldn’t do that today against the Red Sox at Fenway Park this afternoon as he gave up a shutout in which the Yankees were leading by 6 runs after 5 innings. The game was half over and he gave up all the runs and then some but before the Red Sox broke the tie the Yankees got much needed double play. The double play made it look like the inning would be over soon but the Red Sox would add two more before ending the bottom of the fifth inning. Burnett did hit Youkilis but on the left thigh and it was obviously not any intent behind it. Beckett’s outing was lengthened due to the Red Sox outburst in the bottom of the fifth but easy come easy go as former Red Sox outfielder Johnny Damon tied the game once again for the Yanks with a long two run home run in the right field seats. After the Home Run Francona promptly went to the pen and called on right handed reliever Manny Delcarmen. Beckett went 5 innings and did not record an out in the top of the sixth. Delcarmen came in dealing as he s
truck out Mark Teixiera looking to record the first out of the sixth inning. Red Hot Nick Swisher hit a one out double against Delcarmen to put the go ahead run in scoring position for the Bombers. Delcarmen ended the inning with a strike out of Posada and he didn’t allow Swisher to score from second base. In a game that was back and forth for almost four and a half hours the Red Sox take another game in the series with a 5 run victory over the Bronx Bombers. The Final Score was 16 – 11 and at the end of the game the Yankees more or less gave up and the Red Sox took advantage of that and padded their lead. Papplebon closed it out in a non save situation and the Yankees left two runners on in the top of the ninth inning. Andy Pettite will take on Justin Masterson tomorrow as they try to avoid the sweep. The Yankees will try once again to BEAT BOSTON!!!

Mark Teixiera has found another ballpark where he gets booed and that park is Fenway. The Sox mad it clear in the offseason the Teixiera was their number one target but the first baseman decided on New York instead of Boston. Also Kevin Youkilis released a statement recently and it was targeted at Yankees starting pitcher Joba Chamberlain. Youkilis and Joba had their incidents last season where Joba threw high and tight on two seperate occasions. Youkilis specifically warned Chamberlain and the bombers not to throw at the Red Sox during this three game series. Joba pitched six and a third tonight wthout hitting a batter although he did throw a couple of pitches inside to Youkilis but NO hit batters. I don’t think that statistic will hold up for long as there are two more games in beantown and as Yogi Berra said “it aint over till it’s over.”
