TAKING ONE TO THE BANK!

Photobucket
The Yankees are taking one win with them to the bank, Citizens Bank Ballpark in Philadelphia that is or should I say “Silly”delphia. Clutch hitting from Mark Teixeira tied the game up at 1 and the Yankees had no mercy for public enemy number 1, Pedro Martinez after that because Matsui took him deep again to put New York on top for good in last night’s game. Pedro was not the same Pedro that pitched for the Red Sox but the Yankees’ are still his daddy!

BRONX,NY~ What a game for the New York Yankees! First A-Rod comes through with an A-Bomb in the ninth then Teixeira hit the wall scraper to win it in the tenth. Burnett got to deliver another pie and the Yankees won yet another game. It’s win number 105 and their 2nd in the post season. One more win will put the Yankees in the ALCS and the same goes for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim who play game 3 of their series tomorrow night at Fenway Park as they try to complete a sweep of the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees try to complete their sweep of the Minnesota Twins as they want to close the Metrodome on a sour note with the elimination of the Twins from the 2009 Post Season.

Baltimore, MD — On a night where starter A.J. Burnett clearly did not have his best stuff the Yankee bats picked him up in a big way as they hit 5 balls over the fence at Camden Yards last night. Robinson Cano was a big part of the aerial assault as he was 3 – 4 with a two run homer in the second inning. Jorge Posada also went deep as he hit homers 18 and 19 on the season. In the seventh Nick Swisher and Eric Hinske went back to back en route to a 9 – 6 Yankee win.

A day after the Yankees lost a close one to their crosstown rivals they had to face the Mets Ace. They knocked Santana around for seven runs before he was yanked but the Yankees didn’t want to stop at seven runs. They destroyed the Mets by not only scoring 15 of their own runs but not letting the Mets score any. The Yankees needed depth from their starters and that is just what A.J. Burnett gave them. He pitched 7 strong innings and allowed no runs on only 3 hits. The Yankees committed an error in today’s ball game but nothing nearly as bad as what Luis Castillo did to end Friday night’s game. After the Yankees play some more inter-league games they will travel to Citi Field to continue the beating they laid on the Mets this weekend.

Yankee Stadium~Bronx,NY--The Bombers were certainly fired up last night and the amount of runs they scored showed their passion. Mark Teixiera was convinced that he was being thrown out so he showed his frustration by sliding hard into second base sending young shortstop Elvis Andrus flying. Teixiera said that anytime he faces Padilla balls seem to be near his head. Teixiera was plunked twice last night. Teixiera and the Yanks did the talking with their bats by scoring 7 times in the bottom of the fourth. Maybe they were trying to keep him off the plate or maybe he was trying to get revenge for the Rangers fans but there was no reason for it. The Yankees got the laugh last because they kept first place, gained the best record in the AL but the errorless streak ended at 18 games when Jorge Posada committed their first error in 18 games last night. Yankees SP A.J. Burnett stood up for his hitters by throwing over the head of Nelson Cruz which brought on a warning for both benches from the home plat umpire. When Teixiera was hit for the second time Girardi was out there in a hurry to protect his player and also to calm him down because Teixiera was furious and he definitely let everyone know it. The Yankees scored 12 runs in total and they were on a rampage to get revenge. Burnett came up big by protecting his team and the Yankees sent a huge message to the Rangers by not just beating them but destroying them. Here’s a quote from Yankees 1B Mark Teixiera which I think sums it all up for the Yankees last night, “When we win games,” Teixeira said, “I get fired up.”

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP)–A.J. Burnett(notes) used a simple plan to end six weeks of struggles.

Burnett pitched six shutout innings to win for the first time since April 14,Hideki MatsuiNew York Yankees gained a share of the AL East lead by beating the Texas Rangers 9-2 Wednesday night.

The right-hander, who was 0-2 with a 6.04 ERA over his past seven starts, said he wanted to stay aggressive against a hard-hitting Rangers lineup.

“I basically went after them,” Burnett said. “I didn’t leave anything over the plate. That’s a big difference. When you don’t make mistakes, they can’t capitalize.”

Burnett (3-2) allowed three hits, walked four and struck out seven to snap his longest winless drought since the end of the 2005 season.

After winning 18 games with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2008, Burnett won his first two starts in pinstripes before his lengthy slump.

“That’s the A.J. we all know and love,” said Mark Teixeira(notes), who hit his 15th homer. “It all starts with starting pitching. If we get good starting pitching, we have a chance to win every single night with this offense.”

The Yankees, who have won 12 of 15, are tied atop the division with Boston. It is the first time this season New York has been in first place in the AL East.

“It’s about the team,” Burnett said. “As long as I take a positive step forward, the wins will come.”

Derek Jeter(notes) was 3 for 4 and reached base five times, and Teixeira added his 12th homer in May. The Yankees had 15 hits and outscored the first-place Rangers 23-10 in the three-game series.

Alex Rodriguez(notes) was 7 for 13 with four RBIs in his first series in Texas since admitting earlier this year that he used steroids while playing for the Rangers. For the third straight game, he was greeted with loud boos every time he came to the plate.

Derek Holland(notes) (1-2) lost in his second career start, allowing 10 hits and six runs in five innings.

AP – May 27, 11:49 pm EDT

“It’s definitely a little different facing the Yankees,” Holland said. “Each one was a tough out.”

Matsui, who was in a 3 for 23 funk coming into the series, homered on the first pitch of the sixth inning from Holland. He added a two-run shot in the seventh offWarner Madrigal(notes).

It was Matsui’s third career multihomer game, and first since July 31, 2007, against the Chicago White Sox.

“I’ve been working with our hitting coach (Kevin Long) as far as shifting my balance,” Matsui said through an interpreter. “It’s a little adjustment I’ve been working on.”

Robinson Cano(notes) homered in the ninth, giving the Yankees 77 this season to tie the Rangers for the top total in baseball.

Burnett, who signed a five-year, $82.5 million contract in the offseason, had not won in seven starts. He was 0-6 over his last seven starts with Florida in 2005.

In the sixth, Johnny Damon(notes) gave Burnett a hand when he crashed into the wall in left and made a bobbling catch ofJosh Hamilton’s(notes) line drive.

Jeter singled to lead off the game. After Damon struck out, Teixeira homered over the fence in left. Teixeira’s 12 homers in May are the most for a New York player in a month since Rodriguez hit 14 in April 2007.

New York extended its lead to 3-0 when Cash and Jeter hit consecutive two-out doubles in the second.

Matsui’s homer in the sixth gave the Yankees a 4-0 advantage, and the Yankees tacked on two more in the sixth after that.

Ian Kinsler(notes) hit a two-run homer off Jose Veras(notes) in the Texas seventh, his 13th of the season.

NEW YORK (AP)–Whipped cream pies and championship belts.Johnny Damon(notes) and the New York Yankees are enjoying this string of walk-off wins with the unabashed glee of Little Leaguers.

Damon homered in the 10th inning Sunday, giving the surging Yankees a 3-2 victory and their third straight comeback win over the Minnesota Twins that was capped by a game-ending hit.

“I’ve never been a part of something like this,” manager Joe Girardi said. “There’s probably a few more gray hairs on my head after these last three, but they have things that take care of that.”

Alex Rodriguez(notes) homered in the seventh to start New York’s rally from a two-run deficit. Mark Teixeira(notes) kept it tied in the eighth with a diving play at first base and the Yankees extended their winning streak to a season-best five games.

The past three victories have come in thrilling fashion against the tough-luck Twins, who dropped to 3-22 in the Bronx since the start of the 2002 season.

Melky Cabrera’s(notes) two-run single off All-Star closer Joe Nathan(notes) finished a three-run rally in the ninth that gave New York a 5-4 victory Friday night. Rodriguez’s 11th-inning homer won it Saturday, 6-4.

“Three walk-offs in a row. I know I’ve never seen it,” Minnesota catcher Joe Mauer(notes)said.

The last time New York had three consecutive walk-off wins was August 27-29, 1972. The Twins had three straight walk-off losses in 1973.

“The guys are busting their tails,” manager Ron Gardenhire said. “We are doing a lot of good things out there–except winning baseball games.”

With one out, Damon drove a full-count pitch from Jesse Crain(notes) (2-2) into the second deck of the right-field stands for his team-high 10th home run.

Damon tossed his helmet high as he trotted toward the plate, where he was mobbed by giddy teammates. Waiting to do a postgame television interview, he became the third Yankees player in three days to get a cream pie in the face from pitcher A.J. Burnett(notes), delighting the crowd of 44,804.

“It doesn’t seem like we’ve had an easy game yet this year, but we’ll take any victory we can,” Damon said. “We’re glad that we’re finding a way to win these close games. Earlier in the season we weren’t doing that. That’s going to be the difference when the season’s over.”

Afterward, Damon stood at his locker with a gaudy belt slung over his shoulder, looking like a boxer who just retained the title. Burnett’s kids gave Damon the replica wrestling belt, and he’s been passing it around the clubhouse to the star of each day’s game.

On Sunday, he earned it back for himself with his third career game-ending homer, first with the Yankees.

“Johnny likes to have fun when he’s out there. I don’t think he ever squeezes the bat,” Girardi said.

Alfredo Aceves(notes) (2-0) pitched a perfect inning for the win. New York will go for a four-game sweep Monday night with (notes) on the mound.

Minnesota lost its sixth straight on the road, falling to 4-11 away from home and 3-11 against the AL East overall. The Twins have dropped nine consecutive series at Yankee Stadium–old and new–since taking two of three games from May 8-10, 2001. They have lost seven straight here and 10 of 11.

Hitting in the clutch has been one of the biggest problems. Minnesota stranded 13 runners Sunday, leaving the bases loaded in the seventh and eighth.

New York Yankees' Alex Rodriguez(notes) (13) trots past Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Kevin Slowey(notes), foreground, after hitting a seventh-inning solo home run in the Yankees' 3-2 victory in a baseball game at Yankee Stadium in New York, Sunday, May 17, 2009.

Burnett and Kevin Slowey(notes) matched zeros for seven innings, and the Yankees nearly won on a wild play with one out in the ninth.

When reliever Jose Mijares(notes) swatted Francisco Cervelli’s(notes) sharp grounder back toward the plate, speedy pinch-runner Brett Gardner(notes) tried to score from second. Mauer scooped up the ball, feigned a running throw to first and then scampered back to make the tag as both players dove headfirst for the plate.

“I thought he was going to throw it to first,” Gardner said. “He got back to the plate a lot quicker than I thought he would.”

Notes

Yankees RHP Chien-Ming Wang(notes) (hips) pitched seven shutout innings of four-hit ball in his second rehab start for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, against Columbus. New York reliever Brian Bruney(notes) (elbow) started the second game of that Triple-A doubleheader and could be back with the big club by Tuesday. … The Twins are 1 for 25 with runners in scoring position during the series, stranding 34 overall.

AROUND THE LEAGUE:

Andy Sonnanstine - Tampa Bay Rays

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – An error on the Tampa Bay Rays‘ official lineup card forced starting pitcher Andy Sonnanstine to bat in Sunday’s game against Cleveland.

The Rays listed Ben Zobrist and Evan Longoria as the third baseman on the card given to the umpires before the start of the game. Longoria was supposed to be the designated hitter.

“Designated hitter has to be designated on the lineup card and he wasn’t,” umpire crew chief Tim McClelland said. “That was just a mis-write, so to speak. That’s how we interpreted it.”

Rays manager Joe Maddon, after Tampa Bay beat Cleveland 7-5, said he didn’t notice the error when he signed the card and took the blame.

Sonnanstine became the first pitcher in the starting lineup of an AL home game since Ken Brett of the Chicago White Sox batted eighth on Sept. 23, 1976. The previous pitcher to pick up an RBI in an AL home game was Texas’ John Wetteland on Aug. 16, 1997, at the New York Yankees. The Rays lost their DH position due to the error, meaning Sonnanstine replaced Longoria in the third spot of the lineup.

Longoria, available to come off the bench, entered the game at third with two outs in the sixth when reliever Grant Balfour replaced Sonnanstine. Longoria also took over the third position in the lineup, while Balfour replaced right fielder Gabe Kapler in the seventh spot.

Zobrist moved from third to right when Longoria came in.
